Mission
Hunger outreach is the primary focus of our mission. Our church maintains strong ties
to the Corning Community Food Pantry, with a church member serving as a liaison to
the pantry and frequent congregation-wide food drives. The Salvation Army is another
local outlet for church mission. Members prepare and serve meals at the Salvation Army
Citadel several times a year, and offer Christmas cheer to needy families through the
Salvation Army's Angel Tree program. Yet another congregation-wide hunger project is
participating in our local Oxfam CROP walk.
At First Congregational United Church of
Christ, we engage in hands-on mission
work in our own community and beyond
to meet critical needs. If you are
mission-minded, roll up your sleeves and
join us. Volunteer opportunities abound.
Even the youth of the church are actively engaged in hunger projects. Young people in preschool through middle
school pack weekend supplies of food for hungry schoolchildren through the Community Food Bank. Children's
offerings also provide funds for annual animal donations to needy, third-world families via Heifer International.
Many of these youth, and their adult chaperones, formed lasting impressions of the causes and impacts of world
hunger during a service learning program at the Global Village of Heifer International's Overlook Farm in
Massachusetts. In addition to these hunger projects, members of our church live their faith as they work to support a
variety of local community organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and the Friends of the
Library.
